I am trying to clarify the lineage of my great-uncle Richard Edwards Lenoir (1881-1955) of Sweetwater, Tenn., Jonesboro, Ga., and Houston, Texas. He was a son of Walter Thomas Lenoir (born 1845) of Sweetwater, who in 1873 married Loua H. Edwards of Little Rock, Ark. Walter Thomas Lenoir was a son of W. F. Lenoir who married Elizabeth Goddard, both of Tennessee.W. F. Lenoir was a son of William B. Lenoir who married Elizabeth Avery, both of Tennessee. Are the latter two men the Walter Franklin Lenoir and his father William Ballard Lenoir given in your lineage, the grandson and son of General William Lenoir?
This family settled early in Loudon and Monroe Counties, Tennessee, and they were instrumental in founding the town of Sweetwater.(If I remember correctly, I think William B. Lenoir may have been the civil engineer who laid out Sweetwater.)These Lenoirs were Episcopalians, but the W. T. Lenoirs became Baptists, probably on his marriage to Loua Edwards. They lived for a time in Humboldt, Tenn., where he was mayor, but returned to the area of east Tennessee where he was originally from.Walter Thomas and Loua (Edwards) Lenoir had four children:(1) Walter Frank Lenoir, married Annie Powell of Atlanta, GA, and later lived in Houston, Texas, where he was a partner in the business firm of Moncrief-Lenoir.(2)Carrie Lenoir, married C. E. Young, a banker of Sweetwater, Tenn.(3) Hattie Lenoir.(4)Richard Edwards Lenoir, married Idelle Marie Waldrop of Jonesboro, GA, a cousin of Annie Powell who married Walter Frank Lenoir.Richard E. Lenoir was associated with Moncrief-Lenoir in Houston, but died in Jonesboro, GA, and was buried in the W. T. Lenoir family lot in Sweetwater, Tenn.
