Henry Leinhart (or Lenhart) of Baltimore (Will of 1823)
Posted by: Reed Mathews (ID *****9430) Date: February 02, 2006 at 18:28:12
  of 463

I have recently received a copy of the will of my GGGGG grandfather, Henry Leinhart. (I use this spelling only because that is how the name is spelled in the will. I am certain that Lenhart is as good a spelling as any.) Henry wrote his will in April of 1823 and it was entered into probate in Baltimore in April of 1825. I have transcribed the will and posted it on the Baltimore county genweb site and on the Baltimore city Genweb site:

In his will, Henry identifies his wife, Anne; his sons, Jacob and Henry; and his daughters, Elisabeth, Mary, Susanna, Nancy and Sarah. Elisabeth was the wife of Abraham Horne, Mary was the wife of Richard Everson and Susanna was the wife of Samuel Shaw. Sarah's surname was given as "Councellor," but no husband was named. Nancy apparently was not married.
Records from the Zion Lutheran church of Baltimore show conclusively that this family was in Baltimore by 1786. (These records show that Abraham and Elisabeth Horn had a son Johan Georg. Horn who was born 14 Dec 1786 and christened at Zion church 18 May 1787.) Ties to Zion church show that this family originated in the German speaking lands and suggest that they had emigrated to America within one or two generation's time.
Tax records, Baltimore city directories and census records show that these people whose names were easy variants of Lenhart lived there from the 1790's into the 1820's. (Lenhard, Lainhart, Lanehart and Leanhart are all versions applied to this family.) Some of the references may be to the son Henry and not the older Henry who wrote the will. It is apparently the younger Henry (Lainhart)who joined the 1st Maryland Artillery at the time of the British invasion of 1814 and likely participated in the defense of Fort McHenry.
There are actually 2 listings for Henry Lenhart in the 1790 Heads of Households for Baltimore county. (The 2 are very similar and are likely duplicates.) Both listings show a man who was older than 45 and who had younger adults living with him. I think it is a good guess that it is the same man who wrote the will in 1823. If I am correct in this assumption, then the Henry Le(i)nhart who died in 1825 was older than 80 at his death.

Does anyone know about this Henry Le(i)nhart? I have wondered whether he might not be the Henry (or Heinrich)who was mentioned in Rinkenbach as the son Johan Peter and Margaretha Lenhart of Berks and York counties, Pennsylvania. This Henry was mentioned in Johan Peter Lenhart's 1774 will, but Rinkenbach states of him that "nothing is known concerning this son of Peter and Margaretha Lenhart, except that he was alive in 1774."
Georgia K. Bopp has much more on Henry (or Heinrich), the son of Johan Peter on her website (http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~gkbopp/LENHART/JPL/JPL_DESCENDANTS/JPLfgs2.htm). She states that much of her information comes from Keith A. Dull's revised Early German Settlers of York County, Pennsylvania. She gives his birth as "ca. 1742 [Germany] of Frederick and Washington Co., MD" and names his wife as Anna Christina. She states that he died "probably before 1790" and states that Dull lists six children.
There is a formidable resemblance between these two Henrys from where I sit. (Something must be wrong.) Can anyone help me prove that these two are the same man or else prove the opposite, that they could not possibly be the same man? If anyone has access to Dull's revised Early German Settlers of York County, Pennsylvania, I would like very much to get copies of the information that Georgia K. Bopp has drawn on Henry (Heinrich) Lenhart. I do want to compare Dull's list of six children to Henry Le(i)nhart's seven that he named in his will. Any help with information on these people will be greatly apreciated.
I hope very much that I can prove my connection to the Lenharts of Berks and York counties. The tie to the Rhineland Palatinate is just too rich. I do want to be a part of this family.
