My Lemon family is from Westmoreland Co., PA, and I have found a reference to an ancestor James Lemon fighting in the Revolution. However, the farthest back I have found with any amount of certainty is a 3-great grandfather, James Lemon, born around 1770, too young of course, to have fought in the war. The name, and the story, however, seem to match with your line.
The only son of James that I know of is my great great grandfather, Samuel Lemon. He was born Nov. 13, 1822 in Westmoreland Co., PA. In 1850 he married Mary Ann Shoupe, and they had 11 kids. Samuel and Mary and most of their family (minus my great grandmother and her husband) headed west, and became original homesteaders in Nebraska in the 1880s.
There were many Lemons in Westmoreland and surrounding counties. I have come across many grave stones dating from just after the Revolution as I searched for my line. It may well be that these Lemons spring from a common line.
I have not put a great deal of work into this family as of yet, but I do live very close to Westmoreland County, and if new information heats up this line, I can put more attention into it, and of course, be glad to share as I discover.
