I recently purchased a circa 1880 studio portrait photo (taken by Marden & Brodeck, Successors to Kluit's New Photographic Gallery, 28 Third Street, San Francisco, CA), identified on the back in period handwriting thusly:
Josephine Lemmer Cook
Josephine was the daughter of Conrad and Appolonia Lemmer. The 1870 census data shows her as a single woman living with her parents in San Francisco, CA., and working as a dressmaker. The 1880 census data shows her as a married woman, living in San Francisco, CA, with her husband, Marquis M. Cook, and children, Lottie and Milton.
Also purchased at the same antique store and evidently originating from the same family album is a circa 1880 studio photo of Elizabeth "Lizzie" J. Cook, wife of Pardon A. Cook. Assuming Josephine and Elizabeth married Cook brothers (Marquis [or Marcus?] and Pardon were 13 or 14 years apart in age), they were sisters-in-law.
Contact me if you wish to view and/or acquire this photo.
