Lemkes in Milwaukee -
Ancestry Message Boardsboards.ancestry.com/thread.
Here it is.
Surnames: Lemke
It seems that there was more than one August and Wilhelmine Lemke around in the 1800s. Many thanks to Bob of Brookfield for the information that August F. (1828-1900) and Wilhelmine (Willmina/Welhelmina) Lemke (1836-1885), are buried at the Forest Home Cemetery in Milwaukee. August owned a broom factory. Wilhelmine committed suicide in 1885. Also buried with them are: Maria Lemke (1826-1908), Martha M. Lemke (1863-1928 Chicago, IL), Maria Marke (1863 - ? Grand Forks, Dakota), and Otto A. Lemke (1872-1931). August, Wilhelmina, Maria, and Maria Marke were all born in Germany (I don't know where); Otto and Martha M. were born in Milwaukee. Otto went to Harvard, worked in a manufacturing plant in Chicago, went to law school and became a Milwaukee attorney, married Olga Reis (? - 1958) in 1908. If anyone has any information on this family, I would appreciate hearing from you.

I learned from a geneaologist, who worked at the U. Wisconsin, who was doing a research that my great grandmother committed suicide, who must be Wilhelmine.
Otto is my grandfather.Olga Reis is my grandmother, she had 3 sisters, she was from Reisville, WI (now Jackson).
They had 3 sons, Otto August Lemke, my father Nathanael August Lemke and Ethan B. Lemke. They knew their grandmother died early, but they may not have known the cause. However, this information was found by the geneaologist after my father and his brothers died, so we could not discuss with them.
After August remarried, my grandfather, August disconnected from the family. Our generation of Lemkes have lost contact with any other Lemkes, although I had some contact with my grandmother's side of the family.
There are 5 Lemkes in my generation. I have two cousins in Milwaukee, a brother in Madison, WI, a brother in Cardiff, CA and I live in Lakewood, WA.

How exciting to hear from a Lemke cousin! You are the first response I have had since 2005. I have done some research on the Lemkes, and also on Wilhelmine's family, the Rakows. I visited Milwaukee on 2005 and found some information at the library. I have a copy of their marriage certificate, which includes August and Wilhelmine's parent's names and birthplaces (Prussia, Germany), but that is as far back as I know about. I have some copies of news articles about Wilhelmine's death and some others about Otto. I have information on the his three sisters, one of whom, Ottilda, was my great-grandmother.
My grandmother, Vesta Felling, was the daughter of Ottilda Lemke Felling. Ottilde moved to Wausau, WI and married my great-grandfather, Albert Felling. Vesta was the youngest of their 8 children. I have two cousins through Vesta -- we are in Portland, OR, my dad is in CA, and there are a two living cousins in Wisconsin through Vesta's sister, Vera. That's what I know about living Lemke's.
If you would like to email me directly, I would be glad to share what I have and would be very interested in your information. Have you ever seen any photos of Otto or his parents?
Thanks for your post! I look forward to hearing from you.

It is exciting to hear from you, too.
Last night was the first time I visited Ancestory.com
I was googling my name to check for articles about the non profit that I run and got a link to Ancestory.com
I have been helping families find ancestors through my volunteer work with the Grave Concerns Association, we are restoring the historic patient cemetery at Western State Hospital. Last weekend we helped a family from Utah find their grandmother. I have spoken to 2 geneological societies in my area.
I would be very interested in contacting you. I will be in Vancouver, WA to teach Mental Health First Aid a week from tomorrow.
Since I do not have an account, I can not contact you from here, but I can be contacted at [email protected]

Since this thread was posted there is a new resource for German-American research in Milwaukee called: "Milwaukee's German Newspapers; an index of death notices and related items" (1844-1950). Lemke entries include death notices for an Auguste Lemke (1885), published by August Lemke and a clipping about her suicide. (I've posted elsewhere that there are 500+ Lemke entries in the current data.) The index is not online.
Indexing of these papers started in 2007 and continues today.
