Paintsville Lake Project...
Cemetery Relocation
Paintsville Lake, located in Staffordsville, Johnson County, Kentucky, is a source of recreation, sport and enjoyment to thousands of area residents and visitors each summer. But I have to wonder if anyone ever takes time to think about the devastation and destruction that took place in the construction phase of the Paintsville Lake Project.
Homes and acre upon acre of land was purchased in order to create the Paintsville Lake. After living most of their life in a particular area, residents had to relocate away from the only home ever known to them, selling their houses and land which in many instances, had been in the family for several generations.
Cemeteries were also affected by the construction of the Paintsville Lake. Nearly 100, give or take a few, cemeteries were relocated by the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers from Huntington West Virginia. The Johnson County Memorial Cemetery was created for the purpose of placing the relocated cemeteries, making the reinterment sites more accessible than the original sites, however, I feel very cheated by not being able to visit the exact burial location of my ancestors because the land is now underwater. I can only hope that no graves went unnoticed and are now lost to us forever.
Almost twenty years after Part III of the cemetery relocation project took place, I have in my possession several of the original maps and survey charts used by the Engineering Corps. Below are links to several of those cemeteries. Information on the reinterment site is included. I hope these cemetery listings will be of some help.

Dear Ancestor
Your tombstone stands among the rest;
Neglected and alone,
The name and date are chiseled out
On polished marbled stone.
It reaches out to all who care
It is too late to mourn.
You did not know that I exist.
You died and I was born.
Yet each of us are cells of you
In flesh, in blood, in bone. Our blood contracts and beats a pulse
Entirely not our own
Dear Ancestor, the place you filled
One hundred years ago
Spreads out among the ones you left
Who would have loved you so.
I wonder if you lived and loved,
I wonder if you knew
That someday I would find this spot,
And come to visit you.
