I am trying to trace descendants of this Leitch family from Inverness because they link into my Macrae family history. If anyone has information please do get in touch. ELIZABETH MACRAE was known as "Betsey" or "Betty" and was born on the Black Isle, Ross shire in March 1782, and died at 11, North Church Lane, Inverness on 11 April 1874, aged 92 years. Betsey married JOHN LEITCH, whose name was also spelt "Leach, "Leech" and "Leich": he was a farmer, though one reference says a shepherd, and he pre deceased his wife. (Isabella Macrae [ 1.7.2 ] thought that they had a son who became Minister at Fort Augustus). They had issue: 1 ALEXANDER LEITCH was born in the Inverness parish of Croy and Dalcross on 27 December 1807. 2 ELIZABETH LEITCH was baptised "Betsey" in the Inverness parish of Croy and Dalcross on 13 June 1810 and was alive in Inverness in 1881. She married Alexander McIntosh who was a sawyer and small farmer: (strangely their childrens' baptism entries quote "Hugh" McIntosh, not "Alexander"). Upon their daughter Elizabeth's mar¬riage in 1860, both Elizabeth and Alexander appear to be alive. Hugh was born in Croy, Inverness shire c.1803 and was alive in Inverness in 1881. In 1861, Elizabeth and Hugh were living in Kessock Street, Inverness, but by 1871 they had moved to 51 Telford Road, and by 1881 they were living at 45 Telford Road. In 1871 Hugh was described as a farmer of 12 acres though this had reduced to 4 acres by 1881. (At their home in 1871 and 1881 was George H Cowan, their grand son who was born in Inverness c.1864; of which daughter this is the child is currently unknown. At their home in 1871 was a John Leitch, a draper, who was born in Ardersier, Nairn c. 1852: he is probably one of Elizabeth's cousins). They had five sons and three daughters (I have further information). 3 DONALD LEITCH was born in Druimore of Cantray, Croy on 24 October 1812 and was baptised in the Inverness parish of Croy and Dalcross on 30 October 1812. On .............. 1853 at Petty, Inverness-shire Donald married Madelina Allison Munro who was the daughter of Alexander Munro and Margaret Allan. Madelina was born in Ardersier, Inverness-shire c.12 August 1829. They had issue:- 3.1 JOHN LEITCH was born c.17 March 1855 in Milton of Connage, Petty, Inverness-shire, and died at 106 Queen Street, Peterhead, Aberdeenshire on 29 June 1907. He was a postmaster, initially in Ardersier, then later in Grantown-on-Spey and Peterhead. In Peterfair, Inveravon, Banffshire on 7 July 1882, John married Isabella McLennan who was the daughter of William McLennan and Margaret Ellice (formerly Margaret Grant). Isabella was born at Easter Bellehighlish, Inveravon, Banffshire on 10 February 1858, and was a domestic servant. At the time of his marriage, John was living at Seafield Cottage, Petty. It is said that John took exception to the wish of the Post Office to deliver telegrams on Sundays, hence the move to Peterhead where he appears to have worked as a marine engineer. They had issue:- 3.1.1 MARGARET ANNE LEITCH was born c.1885 and died unmarried in Aberdeen c.1955. She was known as Maggie, and was a teacher. 3.1.2 MADELINE ALISON LEITCH was born about 1887 and died unmarried in Aberdeen c.1972. She was known as "Minnie", and was a teacher. 3.1.3 ISABELLA LEITCH was born in Lambreck Cottage, Grantown-on-Spey, Elgin-shire on 13 February 1890 and died in Warwick, Queensland, Australia on 21 July 1980. She was brought up in Peterhead and lived near Aberdeen. She had several Degrees from the University of Aberdeen and had been working on research in Denmark in 1918/1919 before she returned unmarried to the UK in 1919 where her daughter Joy was in London. Isabella became Director of the Bureau of Animal Nutrition at the Rowett Institute, Bucksburn, and was a highly regarded academic, appearing in "Who's Who". By Edward Clayton (who was born in England, possibly in Yorkshire) she had one daughter:- 3.1.3.1 JOY LEITCH was born in London on 24 September 1919 and was brought up in Aberdeen. In Belfast, Northern Ireland on 13 April 1940 she married George Rennie Cruickshank who was born in 1918. Sadly he was killed in training on 15 May 1941 when he was a Sub-Lieutenant in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve and a student of agriculture. Following George's early death, Joy married George Richard Henderson in Buckburn, Aberdeen on 5 December 1944. He is known as Dick and was born in Poona, India on 28 April 1919 and was the son of Geoffrey Steele Henderson and Clara Sangster. Joy and Dick lived in Kenya then later moved to Australia where they were still running a beef property in 1997. Issue - two sons and two daughters (I have further information). 3.1.4 REBECCA LEITCH was born c.1896 and died unmarried in Aberdeen in 1977. She was known as Becca, and was a teacher. 3.1.5 MARY HELEN LEITCH was born about 1899 and died unmarried Aberdeen in 1975. She was known as Dolly. She was a teacher, and she also painted. 3.1.6 ELIZABETH MABEL LEITCH was born about 1902 and died unmarried in Aberdeen some time after 1977. She was known by her second name Mabel, and was a teacher. It is said that she became engaged to an Army officer in India, and was ready with trunks packed for departure by ship, when she received a telegram that he had been killed. 3.1.7 MALE LEITCH. He was stillborn, but his date of birth is not known. 3.2 MARGARET LEITCH was born at ................ on 13 April 1857. 3.3 ELIZABETH LEITCH was born at ................ on 26 January 1859. 3.4 MADELINAALLISON LEITCH was born at ................ on 23 June 1861. 3.5 DONALD ALEXANDER LEITCH was born at ................on 10 June 1865. 4 THOMAS LEITCH was born on 2 August 1815 and was baptised in the Inverness parish of Croy and Dalcross on 11 August 1815. 5 JOHN LEITCH was baptised in the Inverness parish of Croy and Dalcross on 27 April 1818. 6 MARGARET LEITCH was baptised in the Inverness parish of Croy and Dalcross on 7 March 1821. 7 CHARLES LEITCH was born in the Inverness parish of Croy and Dalcross on 12 January 1824. (It is possible that the Rev. Robert Mackay Leitch of Fort Augustus who on 19 August 1875 married Edith Mary Smith, and who died on 1 October 1904, is related to this family group).
