Nancy:
I'm in Nova Scotia, where I see 42 LEIGHTON names in the phone book - http://www.canada411.comhttp://www.canada411.com -
Ship info is notoriously elusive to confirm or even to find in the first place. You might try the following sources of possible info:
nearest addresses to you:
Peabody Essex Museum,
161 Essex Street,
Salem, MA01970
Mystic Seaport Museum,
G.W. Blunt White Library,
Mystic, CT06355
and getting more distant:
The Steamship Historical Society of America, Inc.
University of Baltimore Library,
S.S.H.S.A.Collection,
1420 Maryland Avenue,
Baltimore, MD21201
The Mariner's Museum,
100 Museum Drive,
Newport News, VA23606
San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park
Hyde Street Pier,
San Francisco, CA94123
I'm sure you already know about:
Listing of immigrant ships is at - http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Ranch/9369/list.htmlhttp://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Ranch/9369/list.html - which includes the Immigrant Ship Transcriber's Guild site (which is searchable).
The Immigrant Ships Transcribers Guild (ISTG) is on Rootsweb at: - http://istg.rootsweb.com/http://istg.rootsweb.com/ - 321 ships - info listed by Dates, Ship's name, Port of Departure, Port of Arrival, Surnames and Captain's Name. A group of volunteers is transcribing all of the passenger lists they can find from ships that transported immigrants. There is a good collection of passenger lists that is growing all the time.
Web site - http://www.cimorelli.comhttp://www.cimorelli.com - has Immigration Manifest online. You could also try The Olive Tree Online.
- www.rootsweb.com - Go to bottom of page, click on “Immigrants’ Ships”, read Agreement for Use and click “I agree...”. This gives you Vol. 1 and 2. In Vol. 1, choose State or Country you want, then check each Town for annual sailings.
A few examples of others who arrived just before/after your Thomas:
1630 - Richard Webb and Mrs. Elizabeth Webb of Nayland, Suffolk, bound for Cambridge MA on the “Lyon” of the Winthrop Fleet (Bristol to Salem, MA)
Lt. John Ellis b. ca 1618 and family from England sailed to Sandwich MA in 1635 on the “Abigail”.
This is a list of the known passengers on the “Angel Gabriel” on her last voyage (foundered Sept 1635 off MA in hurricane), with the known families and the following results:
Andrews - no references to “Angel Gabriel”
Bailey - 11 references
Beck - no references
Burnham - 11 references
Blaisdell - no references
Furber - 2 references
Cogswell - 3 references
Haines - 1 reference
Hook - no references
Simpson - no references
Tuttle - 18 references
Tarbox - no references (see Furber family for the reason for this entry)
- Bob Burnham, Hinsdale NH
and in the U.K:
The Public Record Office in London - http://www.pro.gov.uk/http://www.pro.gov.uk/ - has certificates on file (alphabetically) for ships’ masters in the Merchant Marine, dating from about 1850. Unfortunately, there is not yet (Jan 2000) an on-line index, but they say you can come in and have a look (which is tricky when you are 3000+ miles away) or hire a researcher.
British Shipping Records - http://www.library.dal.ca/archives/unms12.htmhttp://www.library.dal.ca/archives/unms12.htm - includes NS, NB, PEI, and many Caribbean locations
- http://freespace.virgin.net/donald.hazeldine/history.htmhttp://freespace.virgin.net/donald.hazeldine/history.htm - an immigrant ship service which may help you with your genealogy research. There is a small fee to cover internet and research costs (£10 or U$16).
E-mail queries are free. - Donald Hazeldine @ - [email protected] - 3 Cyprus Avenue, Lytham St Annes, Lancs, UKFY8 1DY. tel: (+44-1253) 732.169 or
David Warwick, Nautical Antique Centre, Weymouth, Dorset, DT4 8TR, UK - tel: (+44-1305) 777.838

I hope some of this may be helpful.
