David Leighton (1820) Cincinnati OH > IN
David Leighton was born 21 February 1820 and married into my Amanns family. His wife was Eliza Ann Ring, born 27 July 1829 as the daughter of Sarah Brown and a Mr. Ring who, as the story goes, did not marry Sarah because he married another girl, possibly with more social status. Sarah Brown soon married George Amann, later Amanns, and they had many children. Eliza Ann was definitely considered part of the family because only on marriage records and death certificates where maiden names are requested is the name "Ring" found.
Both were born in Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio and both died in the very small town of Burnsville, Bartholomew County, Indiana. David, a veteran of the Civil War, died 25 April 1879 and Eliza Ann died 9 March 1895, leaving nine children.
I am stumped on confirming David's ancestry. His parents may have died by 1850 but near him, likely brothers and sisters, in the 1850 Hamilton County OH census were:
Isaac Leighton (1824)
Bathenia Leighton (1830)
Charles Leighton (1834)
Sylvester Leighton (1835)
Elizabeth Leighton (1838)
Other familes whose names keep popping up near his family are VanBlaricum, Redding and Utter, probably neighbors in early 1800s.
I may have found David's mother, Mary R. "Layton", in the 1840 census index of Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio, near a VanBlaricum family in Green Township.
I checked the 1830 Ohio census index. There is a John "Laton" in Green Township, also near a VanBlaricum family. But there is also a Peter "Laton" in Crosley Township, not to mention Joseph and Solomon "Laton" in Millcreek Township.
The 1820 census index contains, so far as I could find, only Peltvu (Peter?) "Laton" in Delhi Township, also near a VanBlaricum family. No doubt David's parents were very early settlers of Ohio.
Therefore, I wonder if David's father was either Peter or John, and if his mother was Mary R. I should try to check the censuses next to compare the children's ages each decade to find a match for David and his siblings.
Thanks for any help you can give.
