Lancaster Artist / Printer George Lehman?

Greetings from Lancaster County,

I am writing to inquire if any of you Lehman experts know the family history of George Lehman (c.1800 - 1870) the artist / printer from Lancaster, PA.

Lehman is remembered for his association with some of the most important American color plate books of the 19th century.

He painted numerous background landscapes for John Audubon's "Birds of America." He also did much of the lithographic printing for the illustrations in McKenney and Hall's landmark work "History of the Indian Tribes of North America" 1836-1844, (available online for up to $175,000).

He also did the lithographic printing of the illustrations for Lewis' "The Aboriginal Portfolio" (1835-1836) (available online for $95,000.)

I would appreciate any information about the Lancaster history or family history of this George Lehman. All I know is that he was "Swiss."

...or perhaps you could refer me to someone who might have any information.

Thank you,

Lee Jay Stoltzfus
Lititz, PA
