Name change at Ellis Island (before 1925)

This is probably a stupid question but oh well.

My great grandfather, whose name I don't know, changed his name from what it was, to Loeffler at Ellis Island, the problem is we can't remember what the original was, though there is an odd family comment about adding an "o", thus I'm quiring this name.

Does anyone know if this could have been his orignal last name? He's of German decent, no clue when he arrived or what his first name is but I know one of his sons was named David Walter Loeffler (b. September 11, 1925) if that helps.

I'm really at a loss of how to track this ancestor down.

*bangs head against desk*
