As far as I know today most if not all of the Lefferts FFamily come from a family who came to New Amsterdam from Holland, the area of Houghwoud, on the Ship De Bonte Koe (The Spotted Cow). There was Pieter Janse and his wife Femmetjie Hermanse. They had I believe four children two of may have died before reaching New Amsterdam. Two boys remained and they were Leffert Pieterse and Pieter Pieterse. Pieter Pieterse' children ultimately dropped the Dutch patronym and took the surname Houghwout(spelled variously), while the children of Leffert Pieterse in the first generation used the prtonymic Leffertse with succeeding generations used Lefferts as a surname. There remains today in Prospect Park, Brooklyn, the old Lefferts House as it looked about the time of the Revolution. They have several pedigrees there and the original cradle which the family brought from Holland. Also there are a significant number or published works on this Family both Lefferts and Houghwout branches in the NY Public Library. The Lefferts House was originally in Flatbush near the Dutch Reformed Church and passed into the hands of Vanderbilt descendants of the Lefferts. It was then donated to the City of Brooklyn and was (and may yet be) the DAR HQ in Brooklyn as well as a museum.
