Beth, I can't help you directly, but have you tried checking for a Last Will & Testament for the name Joseph Harris on Barbados? Even if your Joseph left the Isle, it is possible the other Joseph, assuming these are two different distinct men named Joseph, and not the same man marrying twice, may have remained, and thus there might be clues in the Will which may tell you which Mary the Joseph who remained on the Isle married. (Such as mention of the name of a brother-in-law, etc.).

Also, keep in mind that in the year 1729, the February date would actually be the equivalent of what today we would think of as 1730, as in 1729, the month of February was the "twelfth" month of the year instead of the second month as it is today. Thus, the February marriage is the later of the two marriages. Also, if you haven't done so already, you might check the Baptism records for Barbados as well and check for any children of a Joseph Harris. This might help you match up any children named in any Last Will & Testament(s), and might give you a clue as to which Joseph stayed, if only one did; and even if both remained on the island, it might still help sort the two men out. (For example, if there is a child baptized for a Joseph Harris in May of 1730, then that Joseph of this record is more likely to be the Joseph who married in September than the Joseph who married in February since the date of the Baptism would be 8 months after the September marriage date, but only two 3 months after the February marriage date and if only one of the Joseph's is known to have had a daughter named with the name of the child in the Baptism record, then this could give you a clue as to which Joseph is which. Of course, it is also possible that both Joseph's had a child of that name and that one of the Joseph's lost the child before writing his Will, so this would not guarantee anything, but it would at least be another possible clue, especially if you do not find another child of the same name baptized in the records.
If you're not aware, there is a multi-volume set which has been published which abstracts many of the records on Barbados including a volume on marriages, a volume on Baptisms, and at least two volumes on Wills & Testaments. The set is also available on a CD. I believe (but am not certain) that publisher was the Genealogical Publishing Company of Maryland. I believe the compiler's name was Sanders, or Saunders, or something similar.

Good luck,
Jay
