Thank you Myra, for the wealth of information on James and family, all of which is new to me, so very welcome.

It appears that your James and my Joseph each had firstborn daughters named Jane. Did any of their siblings name eldest daughter 'Jane?' If so, 'Jane' might have been middle name of mother, Sarah COLLINS (has 'Collins' been proven?) LEECH. Which of their 'Janes' married James W. POWELL, 05 Aug 1830 in Union Co, KY?

My scant information about my Jane, daughter of Joseph is as follows:

"KNOW ALL MEN BY THESE PRESENTS, That we, Jesse STEVENS Junior, Samuel P. RAMSEY, and Elijah STEVENS are held and firmly bound unto the commonwealth of Kentucky, in the sum of fifty pounds; the payment of which, well and truly to be made unto the said commonwealth, we bind ourselves, our heirs &c jointly and severally, firmly by these presents sealed with our seals and dated this 12th day of January 1835. The condition of the above obligation is such that, whereas a marriage is shortly intended to be solemnized between the above bound Jesse Stevens Junior and Miss Jane Leech for which a license is about to issue. Now if there be no lawful cause to obstruct said marriage then the above obligation to be void or else to remain in full force and virtue.
EXECUTED IN PRESENCE OF

J.V. Stevens [SEAL]
S.P. Ramsey [SEAL]
Elija Stevens [SEAL]

This is first 1856 entry. No month/day given. Jane died before birthday - she would have turned 49 this year according to 1850 census.)

COMMENT: The above 1860 census contains many obvious several errors.

Mrs. Harriett SUTTLES GAINES was Jesse's 2nd wife. No issue from this union. Jesse A. died before Feb. 1864. Harriet does not have a husband in the 1870 Crittenden Co KY Census. Harriet is said to have had a dau, Catherine, who married Drury MAYES, and Drury's mother was supposedly a dau of the 'old' Jesse Stevens. Was 'old' Jesse the father of Jesse A. of the above census reports? Or was John (d. 1815) his father?

Jane's oldest dau, Margaret Stevens married Harriet's son Edward Pendleton GAINES, and had son. Margarete probably deceased bef c1858. Edward remarried c1858 after his return to Giles Co TN.

Jane's dau, Martha A. became 2nd wife of Samuel Perry SHIRLEY (b. 20 Jun 1824, Caldwell Co; son of Samuel SHIRLEY & Phoebe COOKE) on 02 May 1864 Caldwell Co, KY (his 1st wife: Clarissa SIGLER, daughter of Amos Mansfield Sigler and Elizabeth Alzira HOLDMAN, m. on 04 December 1844, Caldwell Co, KY; issue 8-10 children). Martha had 9-10 children; d. 18 Jun 1913 at Plymouth, Collinsworth Co., Texas, at the age of 70 yrs & 1 month.

Janes's dau, Susan E Stevens, b. @1848, married in Crittenden Co on 30 Jan 1868 to Sanford J SMITH. Was Sanford a cousin?

Jane's son, Jesse Sanford Stevens, b. 25 Mar 1850 & d. 17 Oct 1922, married Laura M DODD on 29 Feb 1880 in Crittenden Co. Laura was b. 29 Jan 1859 & d. 29 Jun 1920. They are both buried at Mapleview Cem, Marion's city cem, in Crittenden Co. They had a son and a dau. What were their names?

Jane's youngest son, Daniel B Stevens married in Crittenden Co on 21 Jul 1878 to George Ann CROWELL. They may have left Crittenden Co, and gone over to Webster Co KY or with a big Crowell group to Palo Pinto & Earth Co TX.

Three of the children of Jane's brother, John David LEECH married Stevens. Were they related to Jane's husband? Johns family:

JOHN DAVID LEECH: born 1815 Caldwell County, KY. Son of Joseph Leech and Margaret Smith. Married Ida B. STRAWMAT on 15 July 1844, same county, teste: James E. SHIRLEY. IDA B. STRAWMAT, born 1828. [NOTE: There was an Orestes COOK that married a Nancy Strawmat on 21 Aug 1826 by Abner W. Smith. Edward M. STEVENS was married to a Sophia Ann Strawmat on 09 September 1826. Sophia's full name was: Sophia Ann Catherine Speeker Marianne Lucretia Stroman(?)].

Children of David Leech and Ada B. Strawmat:
1. Joseph W. Leech, born 1845. Died 30 June 1854 of Typhoid Fever.
2. William M. Leech, born 1847; m. Rebecca A. STEVENS on 25 Oct 1876.
3. Susanna Leech, born 1849; m. J. S. STEVENS on 17 March 1875.
4. Venessa Leech, born 1851; m. Jacob E. STEVENS on 17 November 1878.
5. Henry Leech, born 1852.
6. John B. Leech, born 1855.
7. P. M. Leech, born 1860.
8. Albert Leech, born 1861. Married Mary E. DUNN on 01 Feb 1891.
9. Georgia Ann Leech, born 1863. Married Orlean FRANKLIN on 30 Oct 1833. Orlean born 1861.
10. M. C. Leech, born 1865.

Do you have any information on the family of Jame's eldest brother David Leech? Any assistance rendered or blanks filled would be most appreciated.

Jo Rheta (Shirley) Helms
