I have been searching for the parents of my 4x great-grandmother, Sarah Ann Lee (1822-1845) for 37 years! I'd all but given up on ever knowing. Amazingly, a generous cousin found a clipping of the 1893 obituary of Sarah Ann's husband, Lee Sills. It not only helps in my quest, but may help others who are related. I am eager to correspond with other descendants in this line so that we can get some of the Lees sorted into family groups. Here is a quote from the obituary:
"One of our oldest citizens, Mr. Lee Sills died at his home five miles east of Camden on Saturday, the 9 inst and on the day following his remains were deposited in their last resting place at the Stevenson cemetery. Lee Sills was born in Johnston County North Carolina June 27, 1816, and was in the 77th year of his age when he died. He moved to Alabama with his father and mother Clement and Elizabeth Sills when he was 12 years old, and settled at Farmersville, Lowndes County. In 1839 he married his first wife Miss Sarah Ann Lee, daughter of Jonathan and Absie Lee, and sister of Lovert Lee of Snow Hill." (Sept. 1893)
The obituary goes on to describe his happy and long second marriage, his and sons Confederate military service, his church, etc. It is very informative.
And it seems to refute all the online information I can find about the parents of Lovard Lee. While the name is misspelled in the obit, it obviously refers to the younger Lovard Lee in Lowndes and Wilcox Counties who married the widow Ann Nash Gulley. Per this obituary, in 1893 while Lovard was still living, Lovard was a son of Jonathan and Absie Lee, although practically every tree has him as a son of Samuel Lee through a third marriage, to Nancy George.
It would appear that this same Samuel Lee was actually the grandfather of Lovard, not the father. Further, if my Sarah Ann Lee Sills was the daughter of Jonathan and Absie Lee and sister of Lovard Lee, then Jonathan and Absie must also be the parents of Phereby Ellen Lee Blackmon (Lovard's sister per census).
Robert Washington Lee is already noted as a son of Jonathan and Absebeth Lee in a number of online trees. No doubt Absie as mentioned in the obit, was a nickname for Absebeth.
The references to Robert Washington Lee's parents give birth and death dates for Jonathan (1799-1836) and Absebeth (1799-1830 or 36). I would like to know the source of these dates.
If you are descended from, or have interest in, any of these individuals, please contact me. Thanks!
