DNA Testing of Josiah Lee/David Lee/Hiram Lee/John Doyle Lee Lineages
Y-Chromosome DNA testing has recently been completed in the Lee DNA Genealogy Project of a Lee male, T113378, proven by paper trail genealogy to descend from an ancestor defined as:
Josiah Lee, born circa 1740, probably MD, died 1805 New Madrid, MO
This Josiah Lee has been previously "assigned" by some researchers as the grandfather of John Doyle Lee (1812-1877), a leader in the early Mormon Church. Two proven descendants of John Doyle Lee have been tested (T108037 in the Lee DNA Genealogy Project and a second one in the FTDNA Lee Project) and shown to have closely matching results.
The two John Doyle Lee descendants (from different sons of John Doyle Lee) have DNA results way out of range for any kinship to the descendant of Josiah Lee.Essentially, these Lee males represent two distinct family lines not paternally connected in any kind of genealogically reasonable time span.
Further support to this conclusion results from the close match of the Josiah Lee descendant to three other participants in the Lee DNA Genealogy Project.Close matches exists to T092288, T094522, and T114112.The first two are proven to descend from different sons of:
David Lee born 1765 Cumberland Co., MD, died 1848, Switzerland Co., IN
Participant, T114112, whose testing has just been completed, is proven to descend from:
Hiram Lee, born Dec. 15, 1806, Cape Girardeau, MO, died April 17, 1894, married March 23, 1826, Elizabeth Tignor Cheek, Cape Girardeau, MO
Even though the specific relationship between the ancestors, Josiah, David and Hiram, has not been established by paper trail genealogy Y-chromosome DNA testing clearly shows kinship.
One could theorize an adoption or such for John Doyle Lee or his father and still have a family relationship for them to the Josiah Lee family but that seems to be a bit far-fetched.
To summarize:Two different DNA profiles have been established. One belongs to John Doyle Lee and his descendants. One belongs to the descendants of David Lee, Hiram Lee, and Josiah Lee.Because the profiles of these two groups are different from each other, the groups cannot share a common male ancestor.Ergo, Josiah Lee is not the biological ancestor of John Doyle Lee as some have speculated.
