14. WILLIAM ALEXANDER4 LEDFORD, SR. (JOHN3, JOHN2, WILLIAM JOHN1) was born April 30, 1789 in Carraway Creek, Rowan County, NC, and died April 24, 1873 in Cranks Creek, Harlan Co., KY. He married ELIZABETH FARMER. She was born 1791, and died 1892 in Cranks Creek, Harlan Co., KY.

Notes for WILLIAM ALEXANDER LEDFORD, SR.:
*Aley was the first Ledford in Kentucky. He was still a boy when they came across the mountains in 1808, traveling in covered wagons from Randolph Co., North Carolina, following the trial of Boone to the Bluegrass. Aley was 19 years old when he left for Kentucy with his new bride Elizabeth "Betsey" Farmer. In North Carolina they lived not far from Boone's Yadkin Valley.
*In 1830, Aley and his brother in law "Surveyor Jim" made a big land survey. They started on top of Cumberland Mountain, up above Cranks Creek valley. They went south 30 miles, then down across the corner of Virginia and into Tennessee, then west 10 miles, then north 30 and then east 10 to back where they started from. Three hundred square miles, which was about 192,000 acres. Back then you could claim land by just surveying it.
*By the time Aley was 50, he had 13 children, 13 slaves, thousands of acres of land and some of the finest race horses anywhere. He was farmer, a miller, Some of the horses he brought from North Carolina. He built a race track below the house. He traveled as far as Lexington to race his horses and was once known to have the fastest horse in the world, which he raced against millionaires from New York. He trained 3 young slaves to be jockeys. Aley treated the slaves as family - made his children respect the old ones by calling them aunt and uncle. He never broke up a family and never sold one unless he causes trouble. Aley was a Republican and the whole family was Union, for Lincoln. As soon as Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, Aley gave them their freedom. He gave them a large boundary of land, which consisted of several thousands of acres. They prospered there taking the Ledford name, building schools, churches and even a post office that later was called Ledford, Kentucky. Many of the descendants of Ledford slaves are of Ledford blood and therefore related to all Ledfords of this lineage.

Dulcena was a Union sympathizer, and was a spy who carried messages sewn into the hem of her dress to the Union camps. If she was stopped and questioned by Confederates, she would tell them she was out looking for a stray cow. She was suspected just the same, and at times Confederate soldiers would come around and try to get a confession out of her that she was spying for the Union Army. They would pour out all of her families stored food supplies onto the floor or ground and mix it with dirt to ruin it. Dulcena died sometime after 1880 and is also buried at Ledford Chapel Cemetery in Hayesville, North Carolina

Notes for DAVID LEDFORD:
David and Center enlisted in the Confederate Calvary July 5, 1862. They transferred from Company B, 7th Battalion, NC Calvary to Company F, 65th Regt. NC Troops (6th Regt. NC Calvary) August, 1863. The 65th was a part of the troops used by Thomas' Legion which helped to protect the mountain passes on the NC and TN line from Federal troops. The mountain people were split in their loyalties and often homesteads were raided by men in uniform and out. At this time David and his wife Dulcena Hicks Ledford and 7 children and Center and his infant son had more than Sherman to worry about. On a report between Sept. and Dec., David and Center both deserted and were dropped from the rolls. Center joined another Calvary unit but David did not and was hunted by the Rebel Conscript. His son David Laranza "Ranz" was about 9 years old when he had his toes tied with string and was hung upside down to make him tell where is father was hiding. Either he didn't know or was one might strong-willed child since the provost guard did not catch up with David until early 1864 in Tennessee. He was captured and shot as a deserter. Dulcena and Ranz drove a wagon and team of oxen into the Tennessee Mountains to bring his body home for burial.
Center returned home to the Hiwassee section of Clay County to farm and raise his children. He is buried at Philadelphia Baptist Church near NC175 east of Lake Chatuge. It is believed David's grave is about one fourth mile away at the old Ledford cemetery with only a smooth river rock for a marker.
