I haven't heard this story before, but I'm glad the schoolteacher survived! I do have family information for Caroline (LeCompte) Meriwether.
She had a brother Joseph LeCompte (1840-1872). She and her brother were born in KY. There are probably other siblings but I don't have them as of yet.
Her parents were John Samuel LeCompte and Frances Waits who married in 1824. Frances was a child of David Waits and Fanny Brewer. John Samuel's parents are uncertain, but may have been Charles LeCompte and Elizabeth (Coons) Brown Waits.
You mention a census record identifying a school teacher - what names are on that record?
Your grandmother - California (Chandler) Flack - was of course the granddaughter of Thomas Meriwether who married Caroline LeCompte.
