Hello Michael,
Can you find a marriage record for Stephen L. for his July 1892 - March 1893 marriage, then the same for Ida at a later date?
There also should be a death certificate for both wives, and you can look at these on microfilm at the Maryland Archives up to 1949 without any special permission. Later death dates can be had, but require a little more red tape.
I have found census errors more often than I would like, where names are correct, but relationships listed wrongly, where names are incorrect and often misspelled because the census taker spelled phonetically, or where the informant was wrong about names and details.
It'a shame your family was shunned, but from my own investigations, Eastern Shoremen have long memories and resent "come-heres" and may take generations to accept them.
So it is possible your suspicions are correct; there is another bastardy story in the LeCompte family involving a US Senator, who claimed he was from "the old and respected LeCompte family", whereas in fact his father was a tutor hired for an underage LeCompte girl whom he got pregnant, and her father forced a shotgun marriage and gifted the newlyweds with a plantation to keep his daughter's honor. The same Senator is the one who "borrowed" the original Antoine LeCompte land grant parchment from a LeCompte to "study it" and never gave it back. My father remembered the guy as an archetypical blowhard politician, and wasn't at all surprised when I related this story to him.
