I have been looking for my father's roots for over 10 years. It has been very difficult to find information on Hasroun. My grandfather was Butros Zibara. He was the son of Tannus Zibara and Marrun Awad (Is the correct spelling Aouad instead of Awad?) He married Mantora Assemani. Mantora was the daughter of Hanna Assemani and Wardea Zahor. They left Lebanon in 1910 to come to the United States.
They left their oldest son, Antonius Zibara, in the care of their parents. Their parents felt that if the child remained in Hasroun, Burtos and Mantora would return. Burtos and Mantora brought their daughters, Amelia and Matilda, to the United States. A son, Walter was born on the ship (October 1910). The ship first docked in Caracas, Venezuela where many people got off including one of Mantora's sisters. This ship eventually docked in New Orleans, LA. The family was met at the dock by Butros' sister, Salina Zibara and her husband, Salem E Maskeny (Maskeneh). Butros and Mantora, as well as Salina and Salem Maskeny, moved to Detroit, Michigan where three more boys and another girl were born. Amelia died sometime before 1918 from rabies. I have a picture of her in her casket but I have never been able to locate her grave. The other girl (also named Amelia) died about 1917 of the Spanish Influenza. Butros (whose name was changed to Peter) died in April 1918 of the Spanish influenza Pandemic and Mantora was never able to return to Hasroun to see her oldest son. She ran the grocery store they owned on West Jefferson Ave. in southwest Detroit and raised her four sons and one surviving daughter. Antonius came to the United States to visit his surviving brothers for the first time in 1972. He died in 1976. My cousin told me of Marrun's father, Cheikh Awad, a royal governor in the Ottoman Empire. Marrun was the youngest of seven daughters and she eloped with Tannus Zibara, a commoner. Is Cheikh Awad the Sheikhs Aouad mentioned on the original families page at www.hasroun.org? If anyone out here connects to this family , please email me.
