i believe that in different eras throughout history people from lebanon area used different names for their place of origin i.e. syrian arab republic, turkey, lebanon, etc....they also used names of regions in which they lived like Zahle, Hamana (sp?), and Mt. Lebanon etc. I read an interesting article about maronite catholics that explained how they came to live in certain areas of the country...it has been common (for me) to find ancestors from lebanon who put down france as their country...i also think that many immigrants would try to claim someplace that was familiar to Americans as place of origin...HOWEVER, finding Ireland so much and finding syria etc. less has been baffling to me...not to mention the name changes...good luck...oh, i also read that the letter d was pronounced differently...i think a Z, TH, or THE sound was pronounced... not completely sure what to do with this info, but it was interesting :)
