i have been considering this subject lately because my husband's family name is Deraney. they immigrated to U.S. around 1910-1920. when i search for his family name, i DO get a few names of immigrants of Syrian descent, some say Turkey, some syria, some Mt. Lebanon, etc. BUT the majority of Deraney's listed themselves as Irish. confused about this, i was thinking perhaps this is because Deraney might be a French name, and perhaps some Deraneys went to Ireland and some to Lebanon...at different times in history...but this is stretch :)...i also thought maybe some of the records are not acurate...maybe some of the syrian deraneys simply SAID they were Irish. I was told at a family reunion that Deraney came from the name of a city in "the old country" which i assume is Lebanon, but the spelling is probably different and I didn't see anything that was recognizable to me on a map...so...that's where I am...unable to find my husband's family any farther back than his grandparents...I am having trouble also finding info on Annie Jerdy who married Charles Habib Deraney, and Habib Tanous Farah who married Nellie (Najra?) Badour, sister of Shickeray Badour...sorry this is so long :)
