I guess the answer is both. My friends are sons of John Michael Shaheen, who was a son of Mike Haddad Shaheen. This family emigrated to the U.s.in 1905. Mike married Sadie Shadad who was born in Jedajde, Syria and they all lived in Tampico, Illinois. I would love to find some immigration records, but I'm not sure they immigrated thru New York. I found some ancestry information, but I'm still not sure of the difference of being Lebanese rather that Syrian. Is it a Tribal thing? Thank you so much for responding to my message. Pattie Wilson
