EL'EEn , as i understood it means in Syriac & in Arabic "the fountain" or in ar.only "the eye".
The Great Great Grand - father of this family, al Halyani son of ABOU-NAR , brother of GEOMAA = ( who the Great grand father of many families known as AL ANAHILA : mostly the Kairouz and Helou families & branches ) came from AYN HALYA,( a village in the mid-way of the railroad between Beirut & Damascus, which means ; ayn or een = fountain, and Halya = sweet )around the 15th century to Rachaya, in the South of Lebanon.
so, as you see , Al haliany took the sweetness from the name of their village of origin as a surname .
in the 16th. century Some of their descendance , left rachaya to KATANA in Syria and took the EEN(ayn),as their surname. Now there are eens in katana , kalaat jandal, Alep & damascus in Syria & in Beirut & the USA.
Their number increased in Katana and gave many branches as:
HAKIM-EL'EEN = in Rachaya & katana &Zahle & beirut.& the USA.
Sarkis (EL"EEN)= in idem.
Honayyef (EL'EEN) - najjar (EL'EEN)
al Tisseeni (NAJJAR EL'EEN)in Grand rapids Mich.- ABOU CHAHINE (EL'EEN)
They are Christians : Grec Catholics or Syriac Catholics.
Good Luck.
