Mary Ann Leavenworth Cozzens (we always believed the name was spelled with two z's, and I know I've seen it that way in cemeteries in Coffman & St. Genevieve) was my great, great, great grandmother. Her daughter Jana Lane Cozzens Boyd( Jana is the correct spelling, and the pronunciation was "Jay-na", although in her adult life, her husband always called her "Jennie") was my maternal great, great grandmother. My grandmother, Martha Louise Boyd, was raised by her grandmother Jana, and often saw and visited with Nettie and Aunt Sis (Mary Ann and Sarah Pernetta Cozzens).Jana and Aunt Sis both married Boyd brothers, and of course they as well as Nettie, were older ladies by the time my grandmother, born in 1906, knew them.We have always thought Grandma Jana was born in 1860, but this October 1861 date is probably right. Her father, James Cozzens, fought for the Confederacy in the Civil War, and a ring he made from a uniform button and melted coin silver while in the Gratiot Street Prison in St. Louis was in the family for generations.Aunt Sis and Nettie told of the family hiding guns and ammunition under the blankets in Grandma Jana's crib when she was an infant, so perhaps the 1861 birth date is a better fit.We have three generations of Janas, Grandma's namesakes among her descendants, and one Jane (me).
