ELIZA JANE BRAMLETT, third child of Lunsford Meredith and Sarah (Slater) Bramlett, was born circa 1828-30 in Pulaski, Giles Co., Tenn. She died a young woman, on May 26, 1852, near Memphis, Tenn. Her burial place is unknown. Her obituary in the Western Weekly Review, published June 4, 1852, in Franklin, Tenn., indicates she is the daughter of “Hon. L. M. Bramlett” of Pulaski, Tenn., and wife of “D. M. Leatherman.” Miss Eliza Jane Bramlet, daughter of “Hon. L. M. Bramlet,” and D. M. Leatherman, Esq., of Memphis, married July 10, 1845, at Pulaski. D. M. is Davidson M. Leatherman, born in 1811 in Rowan Co., N.C., or in 1813 in Giles Co., Tenn., the son of Nancy Partee (1775-1839) and Daniel M. Leatherman (1772-1852). Davidson died in July 1873 at age 60 in Memphis and was buried in Elmwood Cemetery. He was a co-founder of the cemetery and served as its first president in 1852. He is buried there in the brick chapel-shaped family vault on the first lot sold in the Chapel Hill section of the graveyard. His death was reported in the Sept. 27, 1873, edition of the Nashville Christian Advocate: “Davidson M. Leatherman born Rowan Co., N.C., Dec. 1811; died near Memphis, Tenn., July 25, 1873; moved to Giles Co., Tenn. where he practiced law; his wife died 1852; burial in the family vault in Elmwood Cemetery, Memphis”(91). “E. J. Leatherman,” 27, born in Tennessee, and husband, D. M., 37, born North Carolina, lawyer, $10,000 real estate, head of the family, are listed in the 1850 U.S. Census for Dist. 14, Shelby Co., Tenn. (NARA Film M432:895:89).
