Well yes, but I would say that the problem is that you have got this far using birth and marriage registers, and you don’t realise the importance of using other material. Your John Lear could have been registered in a neighbouring parish to Bitton, or one further away, or in a parish where the registers do not survive, or he might not have been registered at all. This happened all too often I’m afraid. I don’t think that the available records of Baptism at that period are exhaustive. Many have not been indexed properly. Also you should bear in mind the possibility that the date of birth you have for John Lear is wrong by a few years: this too often happened. My Gtgtgtgrandfather William Charles Lear turned out to be two years older (1793) than his entry in the family Bible (1795), which was made by his daughter-in-law. Also the spelling had changed from Leer to Lear.
Perhaps some Lears moved to Bitton from Devonshire, and other branches joined them later. I came to the conclusion that the Bitton Lears were from Staffordshire, but this was so long ago that I can’t remember why: it was probably the profession of coalminer. But I would suggest that you have not finished searching the resources of Bitton yet, and you need to look at firstly the will of William Lear of Bitton (1770) and possibly vestry and tax returns from that village to see how long those Lears were in situ. If there is any indication that William Lear also came from Devonshire, then you have your proof: otherwise, think again.
