Sister Mary Ignatius Foley
Foley, Sister Mary Ignatius, DMJ
Born in Cahirciveen, Co. Kerry, Ireland on February 24, 1905. Sister died Sept. 11, 2003. She was the first of ten children who all preceded her in death. Sister celebrated her 75th Jubilee as a Daughter of Mary and Joseph on September 1, 2003. Sister Mary Ignatius was truly a legend. As devoted Sister, educator in Los Angeles and San Francisco, as author, champion fundraiser and Prayer Group leader on the Westside, she won the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing her. Sister was teaching at Morning Star School, a Japanese Mission in San Francisco, during the attack on Pearl Harbor. When all the families were sent to Tanforan Camp, she continued her teaching at the Camp on Sundays, besides ministering to their emotional and physical needs. Her greatest gift was her faith in God. Sister founded the Mary and Joseph League that continues to this day. Those who remember her Mardi Gras Balls and other skillfully planned fundraising events have vivid memories of her creative ingenuity, her charm and personal touch. Her goal was to build the Novitiate and Mary and Joseph Retreat Center in Rancho Palos Verdes. Both were completed in 1961 and 1963 respectively. Sister is survived by numerous nephews and nieces in the U.S., Spain, England and Ireland. There will be Viewing and Rosary on Sunday at 6:30 p.m. at Marian Residence, 5300 Crest Road, Rancho Palos Verdes, CA 90275 (310-541-8975). The Funeral Liturgy will be on Monday at 10:00 a.m. in Risen Christ Chapel, Holy Cross Cemetery, 5835 W. Slauson Avenue, Culver City. Memorials may be made in Sister's name to the Daughters of Mary and Joseph Retirement Fund or to the Mary and Joseph League.
