The book, "Carolina Scots" by Kelleys may be right in saying Dougald and Mary McCollum Leach came from Scotland in 1801, or 1802, but if that is true, Dougald Leach already had relatives living in North Carolina.
In 1790 Cumberland County, NC. Census, there is Alexander Leach, Dugal Leach, Neil Leach, and another Neal Leach.
In 1800 Cumberland, there is Alexander Leach, John Leach, and Dugald Leatch, notice this spelling of Leatch.
In 1810 Cumberland County there is: Duncan Leash, and Neill Leach.
In 1810 Moore County, NC census, a Dugald Leach; and another Dugald Leach, in 1810 Robeson County.

In the censuses of Tallapoosa County, AL, Pat, or Patterson Leach is never listed as Leach. He is never listed with the same last name from one census to the other.Notice the different spellings of his last name in the different censuses:

1850 Tallapoosa AL census, Patterson Lach, born 1849, son of Alexander Lach, who was born, 1810, in North Carolina.
Mother was Mary Eliza Lach, born in North Carolina, in 1823, maiden name maybe McCarthy or McCarthus?
Children: Mary, Hugh, and Patterson.
In 1860 Tallapoosa AL census he is listed as Patterson Lack, born in 1849.
In 1870 Tallapoosa AL census, he is listed as Patterson Loach, born, 1849, with wife, Harriet, born 1851, with son, Alexander, born 1870, four months old.
In 1880 Tallapoosa AL census, he is listed as Patterson Leech, born 1849, with wife, Harriet E. born 1849, son, Robert N. born 1870, and other children.
Harriet is born in Georgia, and both her parents were born in Georgia according to this census.
In 1840 Tallapoosa Alabama census is a William Leach, the possible father of Alexander Leach, Etc.

However, in doing some digging, I believe Alexander Leach who married Mary McCarthy or McCarthus, is the son of Dougald Leach, and Mary McCollum.
One of their children, Nancy Leach married Daniel Patterson.
Daniel Patterson, born in Moore County, NC about 1794, was the son of Daniel Patterson, and Margaret Graham from Scotland.
Daniel Patterson Jr. had a brother, John G. Patterson, born 1798. who some researchers say married Mary Love.
One source says they were in 1850 Union County, Georgia census, but I don't find them there.
Instead, in 1850 Tallapoosa AL census is a widow, Mary Patterson, (widow of John Patterson?) born 1802, with son, Thomas W. Patterson, born 1837, and I think this is the Thomas William Patterson that went to Falls County, Texas, dying there in 1878.
Daniel Patterson Sr. also had a son named Malcolm, which makes me think that Malcolm's brother, John G. Patterson is the father of William Thomas Patterson.
