Dear Sally
Sorry, it's taken me so long to respond. I've been trying to contact a friend who actually helped me with this information. She does it a lot and discovered that she could easily trace my father's family. She's been busy and so all I can tell you is what I already know about them.
I believe Alfred M. ( your grandad) is the son of James Lea and a Frances. Didn't know her last name but one of their other sons is named Rucker Lea. So, this James Lea made a will in 1832 in which all the children are listed in a list of wills from the county in North Carolina where they came from. Can't remember what that is, but I will find out. James Lea also was the son of a James, and may have had an uncle named Alfred. I gather they all lived there, but Alfred M. may have moved to Missisippi to get away from the family. According to the census he had 50 slaves at one point in Missisippi. I should have realized that you meant Col. by the way. Sorry. The fact that led me to all this is that my great-great grandfather - John, brother of your grandmother - was apparently hiding out in Texas after the Civil War. That's because he may have fought on the Union side during the war, despite being the son of a slave owner.
