Dear Bettie,
I am so thrilled to finally find detailed information on the Lay family that at one time was in Haywood Co. TN and later in Lavaca Co. TX.
In the 1850 census of Haywood Co., TN., there is a family of Andrew Jackson Rickman (28, TN), Martha (21, GA). (pg.949-143)
This Martha is listed in a TX document as having the maiden surname of Lay.
They were in Haywood Co. TN in 1850, by family tradition next in AR briefly, and in Lavaca Co., TX by early 1850s. Martha is listed in the 1860 Lavaca Co. TX census, but it appears she may have died prior to that time, maybe around 1855 and perhaps in childbirth.
Also, a Mary E. Lay, b May 1820 TN, m. John Wiley Plant. Two of their daughters married Rickmans. Sophia Hardy Plant m. Marcus Henderson Rickman 16Aug1877 in Faulkner Co., AR. (Source: Faulkner County Marriage Index 1873-1925 Vol. 1, Pg. 277.)
Nancy Susan Plant m. L. Jerome Rickman 10Sep1876, Faulkner Co., AR. (Source: Faulkner County Marriage Index 1873-1925 Vol.1, Pg. 277.)
The last two Rickman men are believed to be sons of Marcus Rickman (41 TN) and Nancy (?)(31 TN) and also listed in 1850 Haywood Co. TN census (page 378-58).
We have no documented linkage between Rickman groups, but it appears likely.
Your help, ESPECIALLY on Martha because she's personal to me, would be very much appreciated.
Best Regards,
Jack Rickman
