I posted a message under Lary but I'm not sure if many people will read it, so I am posting it again under Lay to cover both names.
I am looking for william B. Lay/Lary/Larey (b LA)1855, wife Adeline/Adaline ?wilson (b.TX)1854, m17-8-5. I don't know if that is 1875 or 1885. Children: Hattie, Bennie, John, James, and Vergie (Virginia May(Married Name Bryant).
I found them in the 1900 Census of Texarkana, AR area.
I was told, William was French and came to America on a ship called The Lucy Lightfoot. I can not find a ship with that name landing in LA in the 1800s. I really think he was perhaps Irish and maybe changed his name to get work or maybe committed a crime, either way something happened. I was told his wife was Indian and they lived in Linden, TX, Cass Co where her parents had a large farm. Adeline was said to be the youngest and the only girl out of 7 to 8 boys. Several of William and Adeline's children were born in Sardis, Tx Cass Co. that is between Hughes Springs and Linden, TX.
William was said to have worked in New Mexico in his younger days as a cowboy on a Ranch. These stories was told to me Sept. 1999 by a older cousin in Paris, TX who I located by calling different Lay families in the phone book.
His father John was the son of William and Adeline. My grandmother Hattie
was the daughter of william and Adeline and the older sister of John. The information was passed down from father to son and to grandson, my cousin
in Paris, Tx.
My cousin also said, there are a lot of Lays still living in the Paris,Tx area and some have changed their name to Leigh.
I know my grandmother Hattie, brother John, and their mother Adaline A. Lay are buried along with 27 other Lays in Paris, TX, Lamar Co.I could not find where the GGrandfather Willam was buried.
If anyone has any information on these Lay family members thank you in advance..
Kathy in Phoenix, AZ
