Thank you, Jan, for your posting about Charles Middleton Lay and his family.I am descended from his son David Lay, who was born in Pickens/Pendleton Co., SC in 1778.In my research, it appears that I may have come across two men named Charles Freeman Lay. I am hoping you or somebody else can help me straighten out the relationships.
I have found a Charles Freeman Lay, who was listed on the Cherokee County, GA census in 1834, 1840 and 1850 as Charles F. Lay and in the 1860 census as Freeman Lay. He was listed as being from SC. In 1850 he is 48 years old and in 1860 he is 58.This puts his year of birth as 1802.A tombstone in the Sharp Mtn cemetary (in Cherokee Co., GA) lists him as Charles F. Lay, born May 1, 1802, died Jan. 3, 1877.Buried in the same cemetary are Nancy Lay (Apr 4, 1809 to June 1, 1851) and Nancy V. Lay (May 27, 1833 to Feb 28, 1888).I assume one of them is his wife and that the other one is either a second wife or a daughter. This Charles Freeman Lay appears to have gone by the name of "Freeman" at least part of the time, judging by the 1860 census record.

There are listings for a Charles Lay on the 1850 and 1860 census in Gordon Co.

Both were from SC.Both came to GA in the same general time period. Both married women named Nancy.I would guess one is the son of Charles Middleton Lay and Nancy Freeman, but which one?And who are the parents of the other one?I have speculated before that there might be two men of the same name and have wondered if one might be the son of my ancestor David Lay. (See my postings in April 1999.)

It would be the best explanation as to why there appears to be two different men with the same name and similar personal history and why it's been difficult for meto get a clear picture of who Charles Freeman Lay was.
