Hello Mary,
The date of birth for Samuel Nolan Lay is June 5, 1824.I can’t seem to track down a date of death for Samuel Nolan Lay, but he would have had to die in or before 1872, because Martha Houston was remarried to John Hezekiah Ingram on Feb. 4, 1873
Here's what I have on Samuel Nolan Lay:
Born on 5 JUNE 1824, Georgia; m. MARTHA KEENAN HOUSTON on 11 FEB 1851
Below are two findings I have on his family.
#1
Children of SAMUEL NOLAN LAY and MARTHA KEENAN HOUSTON are:
1. Larkin Windon Lay
2. Madison Randall Lay, b. 8 Nov 1864, d. 6 Jul 1930,Natchitoches Parish, LA; m. (1) Sarah Jane Barron, 3 Jan 1888; b: 1 May 1870;d. 14 Aug. 1895;m. (2) Martha Elizabeth “Mattie” Barron, 15 Dec 1895; b. 3 Nov 1863; d. 1 April 1959
3. Sarah Lay
4. Ida Bexa Epsey Lay m. H.B Howard
#2
Children of Samuel Nolan Lay & Martha Houston:
1. Sallie J.L. Lay m. (1) Edward H. Lewis (2) Johnnie Ingram
2. Larkin Wynan Lay, b. 1856 m. (1) Margaret F. Weaver (2) Lise Watters (3) Sallie Pullig Davidson
3. Mary E. Lay, b. 1859
4. Madison Randall Lay, b. 1864 m. (1) Sarah Jane S. Barron (2) Martha Elizabeth Barron
5. Ida Beza 'Epsey' Lay, born 1868. She married Zebedee Howard
My maternal great grandparents were Madison Randall Lay & Martha (Mattie) Elizabeth Barron.
As you can see, the two are really not in conflict except for the difference of the names, Sarah and Sallie who are probably being the same person. It could be a mistake in the record keeping.I’ve found things like this before. It also makes sense, and one would assume that the “L” listed with Sallie Lay would be for Lenora.I have found more info through the name Sarah than Sallie though. From my research it shows that Sarah Lay first married Edward Lewis, then later married a Johnnie Ingram which was probably a family member from Martha Houston Lay’s second husband.
I did also find that your connection through marriage, assuming you married into the Guidry family, possibly comes from Eudie Lenora Lewis, who is listed as daughter of Edward Lewis and Sarah Lay Lewis. The name Lenora helps to fit the puzzle together as well.I hope this
I still wish I could find more info on Samuel Lay’s death, i.e. date and burial site.I’m still digging.
I would love to hear from you if you are able to find more.
Peace & blessings,
Perry Anderson
