Lay DNA Surname Project
The Lay DNA Surname Project is being conducted to further Lay genealogy through genetics. The Project has been up and running since August 2005 and already includes several major Lay lines. We are a global project having an England to Australia Lay line participant. Please visit the Project website for all the details http://www.familytreedna.com/public/Lay/http://www.familytreedna.com/public/Lay/
DNA results have confirmed that the Connecticut Lay line is not genetically related to any of the southern Lay lines. Four genetically distinct Lay lines have been identified in the Southeastern U.S with some surprises that only DNA could reveal. Additionally, the Leigh surname and the Lee surname have their own DNA projects and testing within those projects has confirmed that none of their current participants share a common ancestor with the current Lay participants. The Australian Lay line is also genetically distinct to any of the U.S. lines currently testing.
2005 was a very successful year for the project and 2006 holds the promise for even more exciting news. My name is Cynthia Wells and I am the Project Group Administrator. I extend an invitation to all active Lay researchers to learn and participate in how DNA genealogy is furthering classical Lay research.
To ensure that all major Lay lines have equal representation in the Project, a special invitation goes out to male Lay descendents of Charles Lay [Pendleton District, SC], David Lay of Pittsylvania Co., VA, the Lay’s of Pennsylvania [1700’s], William Lay [Quaker, GA c. 1790], the Louisiana Lay’s [early 1800’s], and any Lay living in the British Isles, France, Germany, Australia, and New Zealand.
