Hi..my Lay family is from Reynolds county, just next door [James and Emily Bodkin Lay from Campbell Co. TN and Williamsburg, KY].
This is an excerpt taken from the book by J. Gilbert Lay, "Lay Family Genealogy. It is available on microfilm at the Family History Libraries,(Mormon) and the Library of Congress..or you may find someone who inherited a copy. It has typos, errors, etc..but has even more good help for Lay researchers. Just be sure to compare the info to primary records.
Isaac is LFGA Line #30. A researcher is Carol Banks [email protected] are several others..check the LFGA web site at Http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Acres/8896.
Let me know if you would like to join the nonprofit LFGA, dedicated to Lay, Ley, Leigh, etc. research.

P. 332 ISAAC LAY
Isaac and Catherine Patton Lay lived in Burkes County, North Carolina and have created no end to confused Genealogy.Isaac Lay, like Melchisedec of old Bible times, seemed to be "without father, without mother --- having neither beginning nor end of life". We have gleaned from what remote records we have the fact that he and Catherine reared a family in Burkes County before his demise in Scott County, Virginia about the time Scott was taken from Lee County. Records simple says "he removed into Scott County, Va. where he subsequently died. That Catherine Lay, his wife, was born a Patton is proven by family tradition of his descendants. There were three or more descendants of him and Catherine named Patton Lay, viz, Mannassa Patton Lay, a grandson; Marion Patton Lay, another grandson, and Henry Patton Lay, still another grandson of Isaac and Catherine Patton (?) Lay. We have official and historical proof of the names and some marriages of their children and descendants.Benjiman Franklin Lay, born Burkes County, N. C. 22 Jan. 1797; died in Buchannan County, Missouri 12 Dec. 1888, was married to Lucy Bryant, daughter of Thomas Bryant, a Revolutionary Soldier from Virginia. (See Missouri Records -this Vol.)William "Buck" Lay, born 1796 (?) - dates given differ. He removed into Campbell County, Tenn.; also lived in Whitley County, Ky. where we find numerous land records of him. He is presumed to have married Hannah Bryant; Kathy Lay, married James Miller. She is recorded on Burkes County Estate of Catherine Lay; James N. Lay, born in Burkes County, N. C. in 1804; died 1886 in Dent County, Mo. Married Mary Bryant in 1823 and Lizza Ferrell Woodson in 1856. (See Missouri record that follows); Polly Mary Lay married Ed. Kerley. Marriage recorded in Burkes County, N. C.Mary P. Lay and Rachel Lay, presumed to be identical; Lawrence Lay born in Burkes County and numerated in the Catherine Lay estate in Burkes County, no further record. The guardian for these Lay children was a Bradley and an Agee.Lawrence is supposed to have taken the Agee sir name.

Let me know if you find a tombstone for Issac... just wondering if he ties into my family. Bettie Lay Rehling
