My great-grandfather William LAWTON, b Bethnal Green MDX 1844 has always been said in the family to have emigrated to the USA, leaving behind his wife and children. We have of course always wondered what happened to him. I have now located a Wiiliam Lawton on the SS Celtic which arrived New York 6 September 1880. This would fit well with other facts known about him, though there are two problems: (a) the William in the Passenger List is there described as a Smith, while 'our' William was earlier described as a goldsmith or instrument-maker; (b) the one on the SS Celtic is listed next to a Joseph Lawton (also a Smith), and I have not been able to locate a Joseph as a brother or cousin or similar. There could be however satisfactory answers to both these probelms that would make it still possible for it to be 'our' William. I have also found a William Lawton place of arrival given as Allegheny County PA 1880(by air?!), applying for naturalisation (A List of Immigrants who applied... Vol 5, p 363). There is also a William Lawton place of arrival given as Philadelphia PA 1880 (Index to Records of Aliens Declarations... Vol 6, p 5). I do not know how to proceed, and wonder whether anyone in the US can kindly help put me in the right direction: (a) can I get copies of these records, and if so where? (b) Is there anyway the William Lawton who 'arrived in New York' 1880, could be the same one who 'arrived in Alligheny County' 1880 and/or the same one who 'arrived in Philadelphia' 1880? (c)Is there anyone in the US interested in 'my' William? (d) If so, has 'my' William any descendants there? Any help from anyone on the direction to follow will be most gratefully received.
