I had a look to see if I could find your Lawton's in earlier census records.
I found James born in Sutton in all the census back to 1841.
He was a Blacksmith like his father before him.
His parents were James and Elizabeth who married c.1833'4.
*James born c.1839 had siblings as follows=
John. b.c. 1835.
Elizabeth. c.1836.
*JAMES c.1839.
Margaret.c.1842.
Robert.c.1843.
Mary. c.1845.
Thomas.c.1847.
Emma/or/Ellen. c.1849.

Your James and Mary in 1871=
Living in 149 Park Rd, Parr, St.Helen's.
James 31.
Mary.31.
Elizabeth.6.
Martha. 5.
Clara.1.
---
You would need to order a birth certificate of one of James and Mary's children to establish maiden name of mother.
Same for James and Elizabeth.
Have saved the census records and can send as attach if you wish.
