The following quotes are from: THE MAGNA CHARTA SURETIES, 1215,The Barons Named in the Magna Charta, 1215 and Some of Their Descendents Who Settled in America 1607-1650; By FREDERICK LEWIS WEIS, Th.D. and Arthur Adams,Ph.D.;Third Edition, With Additions and Corrections By WALTER LEE SHEPPARD, JR.,M.S.;Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., 1985:

"Olive Welby, wife of Dea. Henry FarwellMassachusettsLine 8"
"Frances Bulkeley, wife of Richard Welby [parents of Olive]MassachusettsLine 98"[Note: on page xi, "Grace Chetwode, wife of Rev. Peter BulkeleyMassachusettsLine 111"; Peter/Frances - brother/sister.]
"Dr. Richard PalgraveMassachusettsLine 19"
There are only slight variations between some of the ancestral lines printed in both THE MAGNA CHARTA SURETIES, 1215& and those printed in the ANCESTRAL ROOTS OF SIXTY COLONISTS, and to quote these lines directly from THE MAGNA CHARTA SURETIES, 1215, may be more confusing than helpful to the average reader.Only the lines of the sureties & nobles who can be traced back to from Olive Welby & Dr. Richard Palgrave will be quoted from.For our ancestral line(s) back to King John [29. JOHN, LACKLAND, KING OF ENGLAND, 1199-1216], see qoutes from the ANCESTRAL ROOTS OF SIXTY COLONISTS.
On page vii of THE MAGNA CHARTA SURETIES, 1215;
AN INTRODUCTION TO THE MAGNA CHARTA:
"The Magna Charta (or Carta) is generally considered to be the cornerstone of Anglo-Saxon law, since it is the earliest agreement between sovereign and subject (i.e. the noble class) on the rights of both parties --- that is, what each can do, and the limitations of powers.In addition, the Great Charter set up watchdogs for both sides: twenty-five men representing the barons, which twenty-five signed for the barons and were sureties for the baronial performance, and [nobles - the friends of the king, who were named in the Charter."
"Of the twenty-five Sureties only seventeen have identified descendents....All of the first seventeen are represented in the pedigrees which follow."
"For the convienience of the users of this book the editor has provided two tables, each with footnotes, to supply lineage information, one on the Sureties, the other on those persons who appear as friends of the King.Though there is some overlap between this work and ANCESTRAL ROOTS, much of the material here supplied is different [such as the added lineage of Richard Welby' father of Olive], and the two books may be used together."

* [Note: King John's son, King Henry III was a brother of Eleanor, wife of Simon de Montfort, 6th Earl of Leicester, leader of the noblility who revolted against King Henry III.In 1264, their armies captured the King & his son, Prince Edward who remained at Leicester as a captive until his escape fifteen months later.Edward I, Longshanks, King of England, subsequently demanded proof of the submission of his subjects, which led to the signatures collected in "The Ragman Roll" of 1296 - the first mention of many surnames that were not exclusively of royal & noble families.One signature in Scotland was by Richard Laurence of Byker, who was likely another of my ancestors.He was probably the same man as Richard Laurensone of Biggar, in Lanarkshire.]]
