Not always true David, back then if you were an Indian, you were an Indian, but not to the Indians, they saw themseves as "separate" tribes from each other, so while
while they kind of lumped summed them all up in around Okalahoma, there are more "different" tribes there then just the Cherokee. Not to mention the half breed blood also present amoung them. There were in the early days as many as 20 different tribes along the east coast and were for the most part lump-summed into about five major tribes, but those five tribes still recongized the other 20. That is why they rejected some people in the Cherokee tribes, they were not rejecting them as possible "indians" but as belonging to their respective tribe in legacy blood ties. Much like saying they were cousins, but not an brother/sister direct in family legacy.
