The material on that web site is largely lifted from various forum posts (including some from this board), other web sites, emails, etc., often without permission of the authors or even their knowledge (material I have unearthed through real research included). There may be published material too, but as you have learned, it is not cited on the site for the most part. While of course a web search would not retrieve email sources, it might turn up what the web site's source was. Unfortunately present-day 'genealogy' is hugely corrupted by speculation and hearsay rather than factual evidence. Family stories become quite unreliable after the second telling. I've encountered such a story as you mention in a branch of my own Lawless', but have been completely unable to figure out where and when it originated or for what reason. Over the years I have noticed that a lot of such material seems to have arisen between 1880-1920, when there was a fad for genealogical and historical publications. The one in my branch was not nation-specific, and one version referred to the spouse whose maiden name and origin was unknown to the people who passed it on to me. I do wish you success in your quest. Jade Notify Administrator about this message?
