David, Have looked at info on a lot of Lawless families also spelt Lollis, Lallis, Lawlis, etc., in 18th and 19th centuries in America. Have not seen 'Loveless / Lovelace' spelling associated with any of these. Could be mis-transcribed by someone reading 'w' as 've', and a 'Laulis' spelling could be transcribed as 'Lovlis', but that is a transcript problem not a family relationshp. Family members would not be pronouncing their surname differently just because of a faulty transcript! It does make sense to recommend checking 'loveless' and 'lovlis' type spellings for Lawlis families in original manuscripts, in event there was such as transcribers' or indexers' error, but that is not at all the same thing as being 'one family'. Can't speak for in England. But logically the only way a 'w' *pronounced* as 'v' would occur would be in a multi-generation circumstance of a Germanic family moved to another place. So far I have seen no evidence of this regarding the Lawless / Lawlis surname. Good hunting, Jade Notify Administrator about this message?
