I have seen it often asserted but never firmly documented that the Lawless and Loveless/Lovelace surnames are related variants. Can anyone point me to documentation that would support that link?
A Lovelace/Loveless DNA project exists that has identified at least four unrelated lines that carry the surname. There are also other bearers of the name whose patrilineally transmitted DNA suggests they may have been adopted into the families and assumed the surname within the last 200 years.
Has any Lawless tested his Y-chromosome DNA for family history purposes? A match between a Lawless and any of the Loveless/Lovelace lines would support the assertion of an ancient family connection.
My grandmother was a Loveless whose roots lie in Dorset, England, where the surname has been present since the early 1600s. This line is apparently unrelated to the Lovelaces of Kent, the more famous family whose members include Governor Francis Lovelace of New York and his brother, the poet Richard Lovelace.
