Denis, The second family group you list is unknown to me. My focus is on Theophilus Lawless in GA because of the relationship that existed between James Sutton (b. abt 1790 VA), his wife Elizabeth (b. abt 1799 VA) and the James Lawless family of Lumpkin/Dawson counties GA from 1845. Margaret "Peggy" Sutton married Wilburn Lawless and Nancy Sutton married Calvin Lawless. Calvin appraised estates with James Sutton in Dawson Co in 1858. The only marriage I have found that matches James Sutton and Elizabeth is one in Washington Co VA in 1817, and the bride was Elizabeth Lawless. The couple's oldest child, Amos Sutton, was born 1818 in VA. Other children were born in NC and at least the last three were born in GA. One of them was named Theophilus. James Lawless, from VA, showed up in Georgia around 1830 and was listed in 1834 next to John Lawless in Hall/Lumpkin Co. (John had been in Georgia for some years.) In 1840, John was on the Hall/Forsyth Co census and died in 1846. In 1840, James was in the part of Lumpkin Co that became Dawson in 1858. He remained there until his death. I hope to find out if Elizabeth Sutton was the Elizabeth Lawless who married in Washington Co VA. I would like to find out the relationship of Elizabeth to James and both of them to John Lawless. John Lawless's descendants wrote of a James, "another son, (who) evidently did not move to Hall County. Nothing is known of him." In John's estate settlement, the list of legatees makes no mention of a James as heir. If the James in Lumpkin Co were John's heir, he was close and would have been mentioned in the execution of the estate done by John's son William (of nearby Cherokee Co GA). Finding a Theophilus Lawless in Habersham Co GA in 1832 is intriguing because Theophilus Sutton, son of James and Elizabeth Sutton, was born in Union Co GA in 1837. What is known of John Lawless who married Agnes Laird in 1793 in Washington Co VA? Was he the John Lawless on the 1810 census (22110-40010) and the 1820 census (220101-31110)? I'll add to this.
