My great-grandmother was named Sarah Agnes Laverty and she pronounced her maiden name as you do. She was born in 1865 in Maryport, Cumberland County, UK. She came to Pittsburgh, Pa., USA in 1892 with her husband, Daniel McShane, and two young children, one of who was my grandmother. She left behind her mother, Mary Jane Hilton Laverty--b.1846 in Maryport, her father,JamesLaverty b.1840 in Carlisle, Cumberland County, and 5 younger brothers and sisters. As far as my American family knows there was little or no contact with family members after Sarah and Daniel came to Pgh.,Pa. in 1892.
I would like to find some of these UK relatives, but don't know where to start. They came to the USA a few months before Ellis Island opened in July 1892 so those records are of no help. I have also accessed the 1881 UK census, which seems to be the only one on-line that I know of. Any
suggestions?
