I'm delighted that you contacted me about Valentine Laverick. The fact that you have a Parton in your family makes me pretty confident that we're related, as my 2nd-great grandmother Mary Laverick emigrated to New York to marry my 2nd-great grandfather, Thomas Lees, in the company of her cousin, Annie Parton, who married the brother of Thomas, James Lees. One of my genealogical contacts here in America traces his ancestry back to James and Annie.
We've been able to find the ship's passenger list that brought them to America in 1846, and I have an index to the marriage of Mary and Thomas in New York shortly after her arrival. In addition, I have a copy of a letter from Thomas to his parents that mentions Mary Laverick from 1844, while he was working in Scotland at a steel mill.
Our family question has always been about the mother of Mary Laverick. We have never been able to track down a license (this was before civil registration began in 1837), and we have reason to think that Mary and her older brother John were not the children of the Ann Laverick who is shown in the 1841 census as Valentine's wife but is listed at age 70 (which would have made her 53 at Mary's birth).
So any information you have to share about Valentine and his son John would be great to have!
