Foreword to the original edition (Southwest Louisiana Records)
The Catholic Diocese of Lafayette, formed in 1918, includes a large area which has shared a common history for over 150 years. Its first chuches were established at St. Martinville in 1765 and at Opelousas in 1776. These were the nuclei for the forty church parishes which had been established by 1918. Just as the civil and military government for all southwest Louisiana, the historical boundaries were the same as the present boundaries of the Lafayette Diocese: All of the area west of the Atchafalaya River to the Sabine River, bounded on the north by the Diocese of Alexandria (civil parishes of Avoyelles, Rapides, and Vernon), and on the south by the Gulf of Mexico.
Many of the documents which form a basis for these abstracts are in French and Spanish. Many are difficult to decipher, and a few have deteriorated. Father Hebert has included all civil and ecclesiastical records, relating to births, marriages, and deaths for the period between 1756 and 1810 that could be found within the Diocese. Also included are documents located in Baton Rouge at the State Archives and Records Commission and at the Louisiana State University Library.
Fr. Hebert makes no claim of completness because presently unknown documents may yet be found. Toward this end, his book may encourage the searching of attics and the giving of archival papers to some public depository, so they can be included in future compilations.

Mrs. Vidrine is a well-known historian and genealogist who makes her home in Evangeline Parish, LA. Fr. Hebert published 41 volumes 1750-1909. He was working on Vol. 42 (1910) when he died.
I am a French-speaking native of Evangeline Parish, LA. I have done extensive research on the families of Southwest Louisiana. In a conversation with Fr. Hebert, Fr. said to my husband "she is truly addicted" ... he was so right. Fr. Hebert knew just what we needed. The man was a genius. We will miss him.
