I was in the UK back in the 70s and ran into a Charles LAvelle that was from Ireland. I asked him about the origin of the name since I'm always asked if 'Lavelle' is French. He responded that his family attributed the name to the arrival of French pirates/smugglers who'd crashed off the coast of Ireland and never returned to France, choosing to marry the local colleens and settle down. Who knows for sure? Probably no one alive today. :)
