Elizabeth HEATH (b.ca 1831), m.10 Feb 1856 WilliamH. LAUGHLIN . She was born in Cabell Co. VA. They married in Platte Co. MO.In the Annals of Platte Co. MO written by W.M. Paxton in 1897 he stated that “Elizabeth and William H. Laughlin are both now dead.” It further stated that on Dec 22 1858 entry: “W.O. Laughlin having died near Waldron, James Heath administered. Bond $10,000. Elizabeth M. washis widow, and Chas. H. Laughlin of Parkville was their only child.The child born to Elizabeth (Heath) Laughlin and William Laughlin:
Charles H. LAUGHLIN b. Oct 1857 MO d. before 1920 census m. 15 May 1879 in Platte Co. MO Clara M FREELAND b. Oct 1858 Carroll, Platte Co. MO. She was the daughter of Henry J. Freeland b. 25 Sept 1821 in Greene Co PA and his wife Mary Ann Remington b. 1827 NY.Henry J. Freeland was a son of Judge John Freeland of Platte City, MO. Henry J. Freeland, her father, was murdered Jan 4, 1866. Paxton’s account of it stated: “Jan 4 1866. On the 4th instant H.J. Freeland, with his brothers John W. and B.F., started to St. Louis, by way of Leavenworth and Wyandotte. A hack was hired at Leavenworth and they proceeded on their way. Henry rode outside with the driver. When near Quindaro, they were attacked by robbers, who fired upon them. The brothers returned fire and fled. Help was called and an examination made of the scene of the tragedy, but Henry was not found until the next morning. He had found shelter in a neighboring farm house and was still living, though he died in a few hours. He had received three pistol wounds, and had been robbed of $70 and some nuggets of gold. But $20,000 in his belt was not discovered. He was brought home for burial. It was thought that one of the robbers was killed and borne off. Clara was one of 7 children and several of her siblings also moved out to California (Ella C. Freeland Bloomfield, Frank R. Freeland). (1870 census for Newton Twp, Jasper Co Iowa has Clara Freeland age 11 living with her aunt Mary E Rodgers and husband William. Her sister Lizzie age 9 is there also.)In the 1880 census Charles H. Laughlin and Clara (Freeland) Laughlin are living in Parksville, Platte Co MO where Charles is working as a retail grocer. Living with them is an Aunt Eunice Remington, age 40 born Illinois, and a cousin Jennie Blakely age 26 born in MOand her two children Gracie Blakely age 5 and Bessie Blakely age 3 both born in Colorado. (This is Jennie Remington daughter of W.C. Remington b. 1819 NE and his first wife Sarah J. Kuykendall. Jennie’s father W.C. Remington came to Platte City, MO in 1843, was appointed assessor and subsequently elected circuit clerk. He refused to ‘take the oath’ required by the ousting ordinance, and opened a hotel in Omaha NE. His handsome brick residence in Platte City, MO was burned in July, 1864 by Federal Orders. He died Dec 20 1864 in Omaha, NE. Jennie married W.L. Blakely on 28 Sept 1871 and went to live in Denver, CO. Eunice Remington, the aunt is the sister of the Mary Ann Remington who married Henry J. Freeland.)
Charles H. and Clara Laughlin left MO and moved to San Jose, Santa Clara Co CA by 1882. The 1900 census for San Jose, CA indicates he is working with the District Light and Power Company while the two oldest children are working as ‘orchard labor.’. In 1910 they have moved to Los Angeles, CA and he is working as ‘gas filler’ and two of the children are working in a furniture store.The 1920 census has Clara (Freeland) Laughlin, a 58 yr old widow, still living in Los Angeles, CA at 1180 East 7 Street and living with her in the household is a daughter Nora Julian age 30, a widow born in MO who is working as a bookkeeper. Her son Claude now age 33 is living there working as a furniture finisher and son Walter age 28 is a conductor for the street railroad, son Mark is also a conductor for the street railroad, and daughter Hazel is a ‘helper’ in a factory.In 1930 Clara age 70 is still in Los Angeles but living at 16638 Ainsworth St and her son Claude C. Laughlin, divorced age 46 is living with her working as a painter of furniture. Charles H. Laughlin and Clara (Freeland) Laughlin had:
Auda D.. LAUGHLIN b. Aug 1880 Platte Co MO. She is age 19 and living at home in the June 25, 1900 census. (Most likely this is the Nora age 30 found living with her mother in the 1920 census for CA as Nora Julian, widow b. MO)
Charles Claude LAUGHLIN b. 7 Feb 1882 San Jose, Santa Clara Co. CA. d. 20 June 1951 Los Angeles Co CA WWI draft registration 12 Sept 1918 says he was working as a painter for the Alameda Matthew Furniture Company. Tall, slender, gray eyes, brown hair. His mother was listed as living at 1192 East 58th.

Viola May ‘Ollie’ LOWERY b. 19 Dec 1889Centerville, Fresno Co.CA . d. 20 Dec 1984 Los Angeles Co. CA. (On her death cert. her mothers maiden name was given as Lindsey. On the 1920 census she stated both her parents born CA).Her parents were Alexander ‘Brannon’ Lowery b. 6 May 1860 CA and his wife Roxie Ann Virena Lindsey born 22 Oct 1866 CA. WWI draft registration shows William Harold Laughlin living at 63 Ojaiai, Ventura, CA. He lists occupation as truck driver, Pan American Oil Company. His nearest relative is listed as wife Viola Laughlin. They are in the Feb 9, 1920 census for Ventura Co. CA ages 35 and 31 where he is working as a ‘pumper in the oil wells.’ In the 1920 census they have one child.
