II. Fred Lau
Business in Halle, Macklenburg Schwerin, Germany as Carriage Maker,
Blacksmith, Veterinarian.According to Aunt Louisa Lau they were upper
class merchants in Germany.Their customers were the wealthy ARISTOCRATS
and government officials.They made cus tom carraiges which only the well
to do could afford.Fred Lau was tall, articulate and well educated with
a commanding character.One who commanded respect by his very decorum.
Fred married twice.His first wife died.First wife was named Anna.
Second wife was named Sophia.One of the wives had no children.It is
not know which was the mother of his sons.Louisa Lau's father thought
that his grandmother's name was Sophia. But according to church records in
Germany her name was Anna.She was small and a very sweet person.
Fred came to America between June and December 1838.His son William was
7 at the time.Fred had 6 sons.They were Louis, August, Otto, Adolph,
William, and Fred.
Fred went back to Germany 2 times after taking up residence in America.
Brought back all manner of fruit stock.The "Lau Farm" had a large
orchard stocked with a great variety of fruits not found in America at
that time.The pears and apple varieties w ere especially delicious to
the taste of yong Grandson William Otto Lau.This was Louisa Lau's
father.
Fred Lau was a great outdoorsman.He liked to hunt and trap.He would be
gone four and six weeks at a time.He would stay with people of the
community in which he saught game.He was well known and highly respected
throughout Illinois and Indiana.
He sold the block just south of what is now the Conrad Hilton Hotel
(formerly the Stevens Hotel) for $500, on Michigan Avenue, in Chicago,
Ill.
